People in the forensic psychiatry or corrections systems:

Interview 1

Q: What would you like from the system? What should be done for people living here or people in your situation?

A: There is almost nothing to do in here, no real books to read, no treatment. I’m forced pills down my throat but that doesn’t help. There is sometimes very violent people in here, I just did my little fire thing and ended up here. Got myself an assessment, they call it, but I don’t really know what they assess, they should read my patient files from my doctor.

Q: Has the system or some part of it worked for you? What helped?

Nothing really helped me coping with my illness and it has gotten worse since I’m in here. They don’t let you smoke when you want and are very strict. What really kept me from flipping out were some of my friends, they talked to me and I wasn’t feeling so lonely anymore.

3: What parts of the system have not worked for you?

From hospital to jail, back into the hospital, no one really cares. This has been the cycle for over 20 years. And the medications do nothing, they tried too many of them. I think that my body becomes drug resistant.
