About the No Force Coalition
The Coalition was started
at a "Town Hall Meeting". Psychiatric consumers and survivors
from around Ontario met on January 29, 1999, as planned on an email
list started by the Psychiatric
Survivor Action Association of Ontario.
The meeting was held
to address the stereotype of the "violent mental patient"
and to deal with community treatment
orders as a community.
The Coalition was formed
at this meeting as a first step, and the Town Hall's plans for educating
consumers, survivors and the public were taken up by a sub-group,
as this seemed the most attainable goal discussed at the meeting.
Research, pamphlets,
forums and protests resulted, with growing interest in the issues
of force, medications, and the myth of the "violent mental
patient".
