Structure of the Queen Street
Patients Council
The Patients Council was a non-profit corporation, run by and for
mental health consumers and psychiatric surviors. Our general membership
(consumers, survivors and allies) met every 12-18 months and elected
12-16 people to the Council Board of Directors. The board hired
two coordinators (equaling one full-time staff compliment) to run
advocacy, outreach and administrative programming. Volunteers were
welcomed from the consumer, survivor and academic communities. Standing
committees included the Executive Committee and the Personnel and
Finance Committee, and ad hoc committees included Outreach (e.g.
parties in the Mall, coffee hour) and Advocacy (e.g. demonstrations,
conferences).
