Patients Council Basic Values Policy
(What We're Working Towards)
Our goal is to increase the power of psychiatric
consumers and survivors, both as individuals and as a group. This
means we always support the ability of consumers and survivors to
make their own decisions.
Our role is to represent and always be on
the side of consumers or survivors. This means that if there is
a conflict between staff and a consumer or survivor, we will uphold
the position and wishes of the consumer or survivor as best as we
can. In cases where violence is an issue, we can be against violence
while still seeking to understand the consumer and survivor perspective.
Our job is always to remember and promote
the value and unlimited potential of every individual consumer and
survivor. We will not criticize, put down, or condescend to our
fellow consumers or survivors. We try to hear everyone's voice.
We advocate for individuals, supporting them
in getting what they want and making their own decisions. That means
we do not decide what is in someone else's "best interest".
We will honour the confidentiality of consumers
and survivors. What a consumer or survivor tells us will not be
told to anyone else without their permission.
